This race follows the coastal half of the Cleveland Way in North Yorkshire from Guisborough to Filey: the part the Hardmoors 55 doesn’t do. It is quite well way-marked as it follows the long distance path and once you are on the coast you just have to keep the sea on your left!
After a quick climb up onto the edge of the North York Moors you turn east and head for Saltburn. The coast path follows the cliff tops south through coastal resorts and fishing villages like Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar, Whitby and Scarborough. There are fantastic views along the cliff tops and a short section along the beach at Runswick Bay. The terrain varies from tracks in the forest and on the approach to the coast to grassy clifftop paths and a few stretches of lanes to link them all. The only real tarmac is through Scarborough and a bit in Whitby. Oh and steps! Steps up to the abbey, steps down into all the inlets like Boggle Hole. You have 18 hours to complete which is quite generous and also 2 drop bags. The marshals are friendly and very encouraging. As the race is linear, most runners park at the finish and get a coach to the start on the Saturday morning. There are showers and sleeping space at the end as well as lots of food plus finishers’ T-shirts and prizes. There is a small fee for the coach and for sleeping at the hall.
